Low Band

OHP's original radio system used two pairs of low band frequencies state-wide. They call the low band channels sides rather than channels. The cars used one of the frequencies in the pair and the base used the other. The cars can use the base frequency to talk car-to-car without the dispatcher receiving the transmissions. You would monitor both frequencies to hear the conversation provided you are in range of the mobile radio.

Car radios:

Side 1 - Receives 44.700, Transmits 44.700 - Car to Car

Side 2 - Receives 44.700, Transmits 44.900 - Car to Base

Side 3 - Receives 45.220, Transmits 45.220 - Car to Car

Side 4 - Receives 45.220, Transmits 45.180 - Car to Base

Base Radios:

Side 2 - Receives 44.900, Transmits 44.700 - Base to Car

Side 4 - Receives 45.180, Transmits 45.220 - Base to car

Sides 1 and 2 were used by Troop A, B, C E, G, H, I and K. Sides 3 and 4 were used by Troop A Metro, B Metro, D, F, J, L and M.

With the completion of the 700 MHz system, these frequencies are no longer used to communicate with dispatch, but Side 1 (44.700 MHz) and Side 3 (45.220 MHz) are still widely used for car-to-car communication.

These frequencies were linked to a series of VHF and UHF repeaters within the troop area. The mobile relays repeated the cars. The base relays repeated the base. These relays are no longer used, but the licenses remain active.
